Offensive Outburst Gives Field Hockey Win Over Eastern

SWARTHMORE, Pa. – An offensive outburst led the Swarthmore College Field Hockey team to a 6-2 victory over Eastern University on Wednesday night. The Garnet improved to 4-5 on the year, while the Eagles fell to 3-7.

Swarthmore sophomore Heide Van Voorhis opened the scoring in the 13th minute. Van Voorhis notched her first goal of the season as she gathered a deflection on the left side of Eagles' goalkeeper Kylie Troyer and finished it with a reverse hit. Just over a minute later, the Garnet added another goal as Marion Carr shot the ball hard off the crossbar and in for her first of two for the game.

Freshman Andie Tappenden would give the Garnet a 3-0 advantage heading into half-time.

Shortly after the Eagles recorded their first goal of the night, junior Chelsea Semper answered in the 41st minute to give Swarthmore the 4-1 edge.

The Garnet were led by two goals each from Carr and Tappenden. Sophomore Aron Lankford recorded eight saves on ten shots faced. The Garnet outshot the Eagles 33-18 with 21 of those shots on goal for Swarthmore.

The six goals in tonight's match was the most by a Swarthmore team since September 27, 2017 when the Garnet defeated Byrn Athyn 9-0.

Swarthmore returns to action on Saturday as they host Franklin and Marshall at 7 p.m. in conference action.
