COLLEGEVILLE, Pa.—Swarthmore College Men's Soccer earned an important Centennial Conference road win on Wednesday night, downing the Ursinus College Bears 3-1 behind goals from Michael Gross, Ayo George, and Conor Gill.
The Garnet netted all three of its goals in the second half and never played from behind. Ursinus tallied a late goal in the 84th minute but couldn't contend with Swarthmore. Swarthmore fired off 18 shots while holding Ursinus to four attempts, and while dealing with 19 fouls from the Bears.
Freshman Max Kral started for the third straight game and remained undefeated. He made one save in 80 minutes of action, denying a penalty kick in the 24th minute with a diving stop to his left. Fellow freshman Aidan Cerveny saw his first minutes in net to close out the contest.
Swarthmore put two shots on frame in the first period, but attempts from Bless Tumushabe and Gross were denied by Ursinus' Tyler Lewin. Tumushabe had a match-high five shots with two on goal.
The Garnet broke through in the 68th minute after Gross followed up a free kick from Trevor Homstad by launching a long-range shot into the lower right corner of the goal.
Joe Barile set up Swarthmore's second goal by dribbling into the box from the left side and locating George in front of the goalmouth for the tap-in in the 73rd minute.
Charley Ward had a great chance in the 75th minute denied by the post on a free kick from about 25 yards away. However, shortly thereafter Swarthmore got its third goal of the game as Gill flushed his first goal of the year with a shot to the lower left of the goal. Gill had gone on a run, received a perfectly-timed pass from Homstad in the midfield, took one touch and finished off the shot. The assist was Homstad's second of the night.
Swarthmore (7-1-2, 1-1-1 Centennial) returns home on Saturday to square off with Franklin & Marshall in a 1 p.m. Garnet Weekend showdown.
