SWARTHMORE, Pa. – Swarthmore College Volleyball closed out the Garnet Quad matches on Saturday with a pair of non-conference victories over Messiah College and University of Scranton.
The Garnet swept Messiah to open the day by a score of 25-23, 25-21, and 25-21. Swarthmore later would defeat Scranton 22-25, 25-17, 25-21 and 25-14.
Swarthmore 3, Messiah 0
In the first set, Messiah opened the scoring 1-0 but Swarthmore answered for the next six points.
Chloe Mayhue tied the set at one with a kill from
Sierra Tyson.
Emma Morgan-Bennett added a kill from Tyson to give the Garnet a 2-1 edge, and Swarthmore continued to add on.
Shortly after, Mayhue earned a service ace for Swarthmore.
Isabelle Andrews gave the Garnet the first set victory with a kill from Tyson.
Tyson ended the match with 27 assist, 16 digs, and two service aces.
Mehra den Braven added ten kills, 13 digs and two block assist. Morgan-Bennett led the Garnet with two solo blocks.
Swarthmore 3, Scranton 1
The Garnet fell behind early as they dropped the first set, but earned the match victory after taking the next three sets.
In the second set, Swarthmore and Scranton traded points before the Garnet closed the set with six straight points. Den Braven started the streak with a kill from Tyson, and a service ace from Tyson. Den Braven and Andrews rotated points with kills to give the Garnet a 24-17 lead. Swarthmore earned the set win with an attack error from Tess Ungerleider.
Tyson led Swarthmore with 36 assist, three service aces and 15 digs in the victory. Den Braven tallied 14 kills, while Andrews recorded four kills on nine attacks. The pair each earned a solo block as the Garnet totaled six blocks.
On the weekend, the Garnet earned a record of 2-1 and improve to 11-8 on the season. The Garnet returns to the court on Wednesday as they host Bryn Mawr College in battle of Centennial Conference schools.
