SWARTHMORE, Pa. -- For the second year in a row, Swarthmore Field Hockey defeated Widener College in its first game of the season.
The Pride had 14 shots and nine penalty corners on Friday but failed to score on the Garnet defense led by senior
Zelda Bank's seven saves.
Swarthmore received two green cards, a yellow card and had just five shots and one penalty corner. However, sophomores
Ellen Adams and
Samie Martin each found the back of the cage for the first goals of their careers.
Adams scored hers just 14:37 into the game as she recovered the ball off of a missed shot right in front of the goal. She jammed two shots toward the goaltender and grounded the second one past her.
Martin scored during the 47th minute on an assist from freshman
Samantha Meacock to give the Garnet some breathing room.
Swarthmore is back at Clothier Field on Sunday to take on Arcadia at 4 p.m.
