SWARTHMORE, Pa.--Swarthmore College Baseball defeated Franklin & Marshall College 8-2 on Thursday in the first round of the Centennial Conference Playoffs.
It's the first playoff win for the Garnet (30-9 overall) since 2010, and the team also reached 30 wins for the first time in program history.
The rest of the tournament is at Clothier Field, and Swarthmore plays Johns Hopkins (28-12) at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday. The winner of that game advances to Sunday's championship game and waits for whatever team advances through the loser's bracket on Saturday.
On Thursday, junior pitcher
Ricky Conti held the Diplomats (18-17-2) scoreless over the first six innings and earned his ninth win of the year, tying the Swarthmore single-season record set by Joe D'Angelo in 1985. His final line was eight innings and no earned runs while allowing just five hits.
Sophomore
Cole Beeker stayed red hot, singling in the first inning to put the Garnet up 1-0. Junior
Charles Levitt also had an RBI single in the second to give Swarthmore a 2-0 lead.
The exclamation points came in the fifth as Beeker and junior
Jackson Roberts hit back-to-back solo home runs. Beeker's homer was his sixth of the year, and Roberts has eight, tying Levitt for the team lead. The program record was six before the season.
Roberts hit another home run in the seventh, and freshman
Coleson Hebble put the Garnet up 8-2 with a run-scoring single to complete the scoring on the day.
Sophomore closer
Jack Corkery pitched a scoreless ninth for Swarthmore. He hasn't allowed a hit or a run in 12 of his last 13 appearances. He has seven saves and a 2.25 ERA in 15 appearances this year.
Beeker went 3-for-5. In his last five games, he's batting .619 with three home runs, 13 RBIs and 10 runs scored.
If the Garnet lose to the Blue Jays, they'll play again on Saturday at 4 p.m. against the winner of F&M and Muhlenberg College (19-19). The championship is at 12 p.m. on Sunday with an if-necessary game set for 3:30 p.m.
