AUBURN, N.Y.--Swarthmore College baseball returned to the NCAA Regional Tournament for the first time since 1985 and beat Baldwin Wallace University 11-6 on Thursday.
Down 6-5 in the top of the eighth inning, the Garnet (34-9 overall) had another comeback win as junior
Jackson Roberts crushed a three-run home run over the left field wall. It was his ninth homer of the season, tying him with
Charles Levitt for the team lead and program single-season record.
Sophomore starting pitcher
Ryan Warm surrendered a run to the Yellow Jackets (31-13) in the first but cruised through the next four innings without allowing another.
During that span, the Garnet scored four times. Sophomore
Cole Beeker started things in the third with his seventh home run of the season on a solo blast to right. Senior
Matt Palmer walked with the bases loaded to score another in that inning.
In the fourth, Beeker picked up another RBI on a ground out to shortstop, and Levitt scored on a wild pitch after he doubled to deep right field.
Warm finally allowed another run in the sixth, and Baldwin Wallace took the lead with four more in the seventh against Warm and sophomore reliever
Jack Corkery. Warm struck out eight over 6.1 innings. Corkery got the win, bringing his record to 3-1.
Three hits and a run happened before Roberts homer in the eighth. They were a double by sophomore
AJ Liu, a single by Levitt, and a single by Beeker. The Garnet had a 9-6 lead after that inning and secured their lead with two more in the ninth.
Liu went 4-for-5 with a walk and three runs scored. Roberts was 4-for-6 with three RBIs, two runs, a double and a home run. Swarthmore finished the game with 17 hits. Baldwin Wallace had 11.
Senior
Max Kassan recorded an out with the bases loaded in the sixth, and junior
Zach Gonzalez got the final two outs of the game in the ninth.
The Garnet play again on Friday at 4:30 p.m. against the winner of SUNY Cortland (32-10) and Westfield State (24-16-1).
