SWARTHMORE, Pa.--Swarthmore College completed the two-game season sweep of Washington College (Md.), beating the Shoremen 18-5 at Clothier Field on Friday, three days after beating them 6-3 in Chestertown, Md.
The Garnet (16-6 overall, 3-1 Centennial Confernece) hit early and often, scoring their first 12 runs in the second and third innings against the Shoremen (16-9, 0-4).
It started with an RBI double off the bat of junior Connor Elliott, which was followed by a three-run home run by freshman Cole Hebble. The homer was the second of Hebble's season.
Still having failed to record an out in the second inning, Washington's pitcher gave up a two-run double to sophomore
AJ Liu.
Entering the third with a 7-0 lead, senior
Matt Palmer scored Elliott and sophomore
Jared Gillen on a double. Shortly thereafter, Liu and sophomore
Cole Beeker also recorded RBIs.
Swarthmore scored two more in each of the fifth, sixth and seventh innings as well as one in the eighth.
Beeker and Elliot singles each resulted in a run in the fifth.
The big blow was delivered by freshman
Sam Jacobson in the sixth. His two-run home run was the first of his career.
The offensive onslaught concluded concluded on a
Matt Palmer double in the bottom of the eighth that drove in sophomore
Alex Baloga.
Sophomore starting pitcher
Ryan Warm garnered his second win of the season by pitching seven scoreless innings and allowing just two hits.
Swarthmore finished the game with a season-high 22 hits, including four from Elliott and Palmer and three from Gillen.
The Garnet will try to keep it rolling in a doubleheader at Dickinson College in Carlisle, Pa., on Saturday beginning at 12:30 p.m.
