WALLA WALLA, Wash.—Swarthmore College Baseball (7-2) split with Whitman College (7-12) on Tuesday. The Garnet fell 7-6 in the first game but responded with a 9-3 win in game two.
James Rutledge, Charlie Levitt and
Kenji Yoshii all hit home runs on the day.
GAME ONE: Swarthmore 6, Whitman 7
Down 5-1 in the fourth, Swarthmore rallied for five straight runs.
Holden Bridge started the momentum swing with an RBI-triple in the fifth inning and the Garnet capped off the span with a solo home run from Rutledge to left field.
The Garnet took a 6-5 lead into the bottom of the ninth but couldn't hold onto the lead. Whitman won with a walk-off single to right field.
Adam Schauer took the loss in relief.
GAME TWO: Swarthmore 9, Whitman 3
Levitt got the Garnet started in game two by hitting a solo home run in the second inning. In the seventh inning, Swarthmore tied the score at 3-3 on a single through the left side by freshman
Michael Sepe.
The Garnet exploded in the eighth inning with six runs. Yoshii posted the first run of the inning with a bomb over the left field fence. Swarthmore scored two runs in the inning on pitching/catching miscues. Another two runs came in on a single by Levitt, and freshman
Coleson Hebble brought in Swarthmore's final run with a triple to center field.
Owen Webb got the start for Swarthmore and pitched six innings, striking out seven.
Max Kassan entered the game with the score tied at 3-3 and kept Whitman off the board the rest of the way. Kassan struck out two batters in the three-inning win.
Swarthmore plays a doubleheader at the University of Puget Sound at 3 p.m. (ET) on Wednesday.
