SWARTHMORE, Pa.—No. 11 Swarthmore College Men's Basketball finished as the Centennial Conference runner-up on Saturday night following a 61-57 home loss to No. 16 Johns Hopkins University.
Cam Wiley scored 20 points to lead the Garnet while shooting 8-for-16 from the floor. No other Garnet player reached double figures.
Ryan Ingram posted eight points. Four players had six points:
Zac O'Dell,
Robbie Walsh,
Conor Harkins and
Nate Shafer.
Zack Yonda added five points.
Swarthmore's chances of repeating as Centennial Conference champions were looking good at the end of the first half as the Garnet closed out the period on a 7-2 run and with a nine-point lead.
Early in the second, however, Swarthmore went more than four minutes without a basket and Hopkins took advantage with a 9-0 run. Hopkins led for the first time in the game, 41-39, with 12:04 to play. A 3-pointer from Kyle Doran put Hopkins ahead by six points with 3:09 to play.
Swarthmore tried to recover, and pulled within two points with 1:21 to go.
Nate Shafer had a big block on the defensive end that led to
Cam Wiley dashing to the hoop for a successful layup that made it a one-possession game. With time winding down and in need of getting the ball back, Swarthmore had to foul, but had only committed three team fouls up to that point. The Garnet put Hopkins in the bonus, but Hopkins' Michael Gardner connected on all six of his free throws to put the game away.
Gardner led all scorers with 15 points. Conner Delaney added 13, and Kyle Doran and Harry O'Neil each had 11.
Swarthmore shot 52.3 percent overall and 53.8 percent from the free-throw line. Hopkins went for 47.2 percent from the field and 87.5 percent from the line.
Without getting the Centennial Conference's automatic qualifier into the NCAA Tournament, the Garnet will have to rely on their strong resume this season to earn an at-large bid into the tournament. The NCAA will air its selection show on Monday at 12:30 p.m.
