BALTIMORE—The situation at the top of the Centennial Conference got a little more complicated on Saturday when No. 11 Swarthmore College Men's Basketball was upset on the road by Johns Hopkins University in double overtime, 93-91.
With two games left, Swarthmore, Johns Hopkins and Franklin & Marshall College are now all knotted up at 13-3 in league play. Hopkins has split its season series with Swarthmore and F&M. Swarthmore is 0-1 against F&M, but gets to face the Diplomats at home to end the season. For the Garnet to earn the top seed in the Centennial postseason, they need to win out, and either have Hopkins lose one more game or have Ursinus finish ahead of Muhlenberg and Dickinson in the standings.
Swarthmore fell behind in Saturday's game, but made a furious comeback to force overtime. The Garnet were cold to start, shooting 28.6 percent from the floor in the first half. In the second half, Swarthmore went 55.6 percent from the floor.
Hopkins made a 9-0 run that ended with 6:57 left in the first half and closed out the half on an 8-1 run.
The Garnet trailed by 12 points with 10:43 to play. Swarthmore caught fire from behind the 3-point line, going 4-for-4 from deep over a three-minute span. An old school 3-point play from
Zac O'Dell pulled Swarthmore within one point with 3:36 to go. A free throw from
Ryan Ingram evened the score at 59-59 with 3:19 left. The teams began to trade points down the stretch, but a 3-pointer by
Zack Yonda with 32 seconds left gave Swarthmore its first lead since 9:48 in the first half.
Hopkins however tied the game at 66-66 with 15 seconds left off a solitary free throw to force overtime.
In the first overtime, Swarthmore took a four-point lead after two minutes. Swarthmore held a four-point lead with 23 seconds left. Hopkins responded with a 3-pointer, Swarthmore hit a free throw with 13 seconds left, and Hopkins sank two free throws with a second left to force a second overtime.
The Garnet trailed by one in the final minute of the second overtime, but Yonda knocked down a 3-pointer from the corner off a kick out from O'Dell to give Swarthmore a two-point advantage. Hopkins tied the game with a putback layup on the other end.
Cam Wiley was inexplicably fouled in the backcourt with 18 seconds left and hit one attempt from the stripe.
After getting the ball back, Hopkins' Michael Gardner, who scored a team-high 18 points, knocked down a 3-pointer from the wing to go ahead by two with six seconds left. Swarthmore got one last chance, but couldn't come away with the win.
Six Garnet players scored double digits with
Cam Wiley leading the way with 19. Wiley also had eight rebounds.
Nate Shafer posted 16 points and 11 rebounds off the bench.
Zac O'Dell also had a double-double, going for 15 points and 13 rebounds. O'Dell kept possessions alive as 10 of the rebounds he collected were on the offensive end. He also recorded three blocks and a steal. Yonda finished with 14 points,
Robbie Walsh contributed 11 and
Conor Harkins added 10.
Johns Hopkins also had six players scoring double digits. The Blue Jays have now rattled off nine straight wins since losing at Swarthmore on Jan. 11.
Swarthmore committed a season-low eight turnovers and has only committed 28 giveaways total in the past three games.
The Garnet, however, left points at the free-throw line, missing 18 free throw attempts for the second time this season (did so against Haverford in a 65-60 road win in January).
Swarthmore's final two regular season games are in the friendly confines of Tarble Pavilion. The Garnet host Haverford on Wednesday at 8 p.m. and host F&M on Saturday at 3 p.m.
A previous version of this article incorrectly reported Johns Hopkins having two wins over F&M.
