MIDDLEBURY, Vt.—Tuesday night's 91-75 win over the Middlebury College Panthers marked a historic first for Swarthmore College Men's Basketball, a win over a nationally-ranked opponent. At tip-off, Middlebury (7-2) was ranked No. 2 in the national poll and Swarthmore (10-1) checked in at No. 15 (The newest poll was released during the second half of the game and listed Middlebury at No. 4 and Swarthmore at No. 12).
Only two other Centennial Conference teams have ever beaten a team in the top two in the nation (F&M in 2012 & Muhlenberg in 1995).
The Garnet got strong shooting performances from
Cam Wiley (8-for-11) and
Zac O'Dell (8-for-14) in the upset win. Wiley posted a game-high 22 points to go along with five rebounds and five assists, and O'Dell added 19 points and 14 rebounds. Wiley and O'Dell combined for 27 points in the second half.
Nate Shafer contributed 12 points and had eight rebounds and five blocked shots.
Ryan Ingram dropped in 10 points for his third consecutive game in double digits.
Jim Lammers corralled a season-high 10 rebounds.
The teams traded barbs early on, with Swarthmore clinging to a 16-14 lead with 12 minutes left in the first half. The Garnet then burst out for 10 consecutive points and a 17-2 run. Swarthmore took a 15-point lead into the half and led by 18 early in the second.
Middlebury's Matt Folger, who scored 12 of his team-high 21 points in the second half, pulled the Panthers to within seven points with nine minutes to go.
Four straight points from Lammers gave Swarthmore a double-digit lead for the remaining six minutes.
The Garnet finished with 16 second-chance points off of 16 offensive rebounds. Overall, Swarthmore held a 50-37 rebounding advantage over Middlebury.
Swarthmore is back at home on Saturday and hosts Gettysburg College at 1 p.m.
