Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Garnet Post Third Consecutive Shutout in Win over Neumann

ASTON, Pa.–The Swarthmore College field hockey team improved to 4-1 on the season after a 3-0 shutout of the Neumann Knights on Wednesday, Sep. 13.

The Garnet held a 22-4 advantage on shots, including a 15-2 margin in shots on goal, as they applied constant pressure to the host Knights. Sophie Peipher and Kathleen Carmichael both scored for the second consecutive game and Riya Garg netted her second tally of the season. Ali Baratta put four shots toward goal while Clare Perez notched three.

The Garnet controlled the game from the beginning as the freshman Baratta recorded two shots on goal in quick succession before Peipher snuck one past Lizzie Yu from just inside the circle at 11:48. The Knights earned a pair of penalty corners after the goal, but their possession was short lived as Swarthmore continued to bombard Yu with shot after shot. Near the end of the half, Carmichael put one toward goal that evaded Yu, but was eventually stopped by the Neumann defender to keep the hosts within one.

In the second half, Swarthmore picked up where it left off as it dictated the tempo of play. After a series of corners, Garg struck from the top of the circle to double the Garnet lead. The Knights later forced Zelda Bank to make two saves and were unable to get on the scoreboard. In the final minutes of the contest, Carmichael added one more insurance goal on a penalty stroke and sealed the deal.

Swarthmore looks to continue this momentum into conference play which begins on Saturday, Sep. 16 at 1 p.m. when it hosts the Dickinson Red Devils at Clothier Field.
