HAVERFORD, Pa.—Swarthmore College Women's Lacrosse's 2017 season came to an end with the highest scoring game of the season. On Saturday, Swarthmore and Haverford lit up the scoreboard with a combined 35 goals; the Garnet ended up on the losing end of the 20-15 shootout.
Senior Briana Narzikul, who started all 64 games of her college career, scored five goals in her final game. Narzikul, the only senior on the Garnet squad, finished her career with 81 goals and 19 assists for an even 100 points, and also recorded 115 draw controls.
Tess Wild also scored five times for the Garnet and finished the year with 37 goals scored.
Taylor Chiang netted three goals for her first hat trick of the season.
Sydnie Schwarz and Tessa Hannigan also scored.
The Garnet were the first to score as Tess Wild netted a goal 55 seconds into the game. Following a triplet of Haverford goals, Chiang scored her first two goals to even the count at 3-3 with 23:16 left in the first. Haverford slowly distanced themselves from Swarthmore as the first half progressed. Narzikul scored with 2:36 left in the first to pull Swarthmore within four goals, 11-7.
Swarthmore scored just one fewer goal than Haverford in the second half. After Haverford built a 20-12 lead, Narzikul scored three straight goals in the final six minutes to pull Swarthmore within five goals by the game's end.
From 2016 to 2017 the Garnet improved by three games, finishing this year with an 8-8 record. The Garnet's scoring output also improved from 152 goals in 2016 to 175 this year, and their goals allowed went from 173 to 149.
The young Garnet squad looks to continue to improve in 2018.
