SWARTHMORE, Pa.–The Swarthmore College baseball team sent off seniors
Ryan Burnett,
Wesley Fishburn and
Steven Matos-Torres in style by taking two from the McDaniel Green Terror on Saturday, April 29. Swarthmore prevailed 14-12 in game one and erased a four-run deficit for a 10-7 win in the night cap.
Although the Garnet won both of their games, they were eliminated from playoff contention after wins by Haverford and Franklin & Marshall.
There was no shortage of offense as Swarthmore collected 18 hits in the opening game.
Max Grullon recorded four while
Matt Palmer tallied three as did Fishburn, who had a homer and three RBIs.
AJ Liu had a pair of singles and crossed the plate three times and Burnett and
Cole Beeker each had two hits.
The Green Terror jumped ahead to a three-run lead after the first, but Swarthmore chipped away in the bottom of the frame. Fishburn plated Liu with a sac fly and
Conor Elliott scored on Beeker's base hit. Three more runs came in the second, punctuated by doubles from Burnett and Fishburn.
Swarthmore eventually led 7-4 before a three-run sixth inning from the Terror knotted the game up. The tie did not last long with Liu, Fishburn, Grullon and Elliott all crossed the plate. McDaniel showed resolve with two runs to keep it close in the seventh but an immediate answer came in the form of a three-run shot from Fishburn.
Jackson Ramey picked up the win with 1.1 innings of relief.
In the nightcap, Burnett appeared in the 143th game of the career, surpassing the previous program record for games played set by Nick Burnett (no relation) at 142. Elliott capped off a breakout sophomore season with a homer, three runs and three RBIs in the game.
The difference-maker for the Garnet was a seven-run seventh inning that turned a 7-3 deficit into a 10-7 lead. Grullon and Palmer reached scoring position with one out and a walk by Burnett loaded the bases. Liu walked in a run, as did Levitt on the subsequent plate appearance. Back-to-back doubles by Elliott and Beeker cleared the bases and Grullon completed the scoring with an RBI-base hit. Sophomore
Ricky Conti protected the lead to pick up his first win of the season.
The Garnet will miss the extensive contributions from its three seniors, but appear well-situated for the future with a young roster poised to assert itself atop the Centennial Conference.
