COLLEGEVILLE, Pa.—Swarthmore College Men's Lacrosse fell by the slimmest of margins to the nationally-ranked Ursinus College Bears 9-8 in Saturday's Centennial Conference game. Swarthmore got three shots off in the final minute in an attempt to tie the game, but tries didn't find the back of the net.
Swarthmore slipped to 5-4 with the loss while Ursinus, ranked No. 17 nationally, improved to 7-2.
Cam Marsh led the Garnet with four goals and had a chance for a fifth, what would have been the tying goal with 13 seconds left, but his close-range shot was robbed by goalie Elliot Shevitz who finished with 10 saves. Marsh has a team-leading 23 goals this season.
Freshman
Nathaniel Johns added a pair of goals, and
Austin Chang and
Jake Ross also scored.
In the first quarter of Saturday's back-and-forth battle, both teams recorded three goals. In the second, Swarthmore went up 5-3 following Chang's goal with 9:07 to play and Ross' goal with 5:54 left. Ursinus got one back on a man-up score with a minute left in the half and then scored the first two goals of the third quarter to take a 6-5 advantage.
Johns set up Marsh for his third goal of the game with 8:41 to play in the third quarter, evening the score at 6-6. Ursinus led off the fourth with a pair of goals, but Swarthmore responded with a goal from Johns and then a man-up goal from Marsh to once again tie the game, this time with 8:25 remaining.
Ursinus' Gerard Brown scored the game-winner with 6:14 left.
Faceoff specialist
Stephen Ducey won nine draws and
Andrew Choe added two as the Garnet edged the Bears 11-10 on faceoffs.
Swarthmore returns to action next Saturday at Gettysburg College, another nationally-ranked team in the conference. The Gettysburg Bullets are currently ranked No. 13.
