FORT MYERS, Fla.–The Swarthmore College baseball team (6-8) wrapped up its Spring Break trip with a 6-4 record after splitting a pair of games against the United States Coast Guard Academy on Friday, March 10.
Swarthmore fell 6-1 in the first game before riding strong pitching to a 3-1 win in the nightcap.
In game one, the Bears of Coast Guard Academy built a 6-0 lead on four extra-base hits and conceded one run in the bottom of the seventh for the final margin.
Swarthmore got on the board early with a run in the first inning of game two.
Charles Levitt led off with a double to center field and stole third with one out. Starting pitcher
Cole Beeker helped his own cause by driving in Levitt for his 10th RBI of the season.
In his first start on the mound, Beeker allowed only two hits and one unearned run in 4.2 innings. Relief pitchers
Jackson Ramey,
Zach Gonzalez and
Griffin Kammerer combined to allow two hits and Kammerer earned his third save in as many days with three strikeouts in the final 1.1 frames.
Coast Guard took advantage of a fielding misplay by the Garnet and tied up the game in the bottom of the second. Swarthmore regained the lead in the fourth, started off by
Cal Barnett-Mayotte's base hit.
Matt Palmer followed with a single and both runners entered scoring position on a sac bunt by
Kenji Yoshii. Levitt and
Ryan Burnett drove in runs and the Garnet held off the Bears to conclude their time in Florida.
Swarthmore returns to frosty Pennsylvania to play nonconference opponent Eastern on Tuesday, March 14 at 3:30 p.m.
