LANCASTER, Pa,—A fourth-quarter comeback by the Swarthmore Colleg women's basketball team came up just short in a 65-61 loss to the Franklin & Marshall College Diplomats on Saturday, Feb. 18.
Maggie O'Neil did a little bit of everything in her final collegiate game with 16 points from four three-pointers, eight rebounds, five assists and three blocks.
Lindsay O'Sullivan recorded a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds as
Hayley Raymond was just shy with 10 points and eight boards.
Bridget Scott sank all six of her attempts from the line and
Abigail Pirron had seven points in a game-high 37 minutes.
The Garnet held a 47-37 rebounding advantage and turned 16 offensive boards into 14 second chance points on the afternoon.
The Diplomats held a 12-6 lead with just over two minutes remaining in the first quarter before Swarthmore answered with a 7-0 run, capped off by an O'Neil trey, to take a 13-12 advantage into the second. Another three-pointer by O'Neil gave Swarthmore a five-point margin, its biggest lead of the day, at 22-17, but F&M rode four points apiece from Ashlyn Petersen and Sarah Pisani to a slight advantage at the break.
The Garnet started strong in the third and eventually gained a four-point margin as O'Sullivan converted a layup at 7:29 remaining. A timeout allowed the hosts to regroup and retake the lead at 52-45 right before the fourth. Swarthmore managed to keep the game within one possession for much of the final period and trailed by just three after O'Neil hit another from downtown to make it 63-60 for the hosts. The Diplomats converted two free throws on the other end and the Garnet were unable to finish the possession, despite grabbing three offensive boards in the final series.
Swarthmore graduates only two seniors and looks to build a solid corps of young players heading into the 2017-18 season.
