Bourne Reaches 1,000 Career Points In Win Over Mules

SWARTHMORE, Pa.—Senior forward Chris Bourne sank his 1,000th career point in the first half of Swarthmore College Men's Basketball's 70-50 win over Muhlenberg College on Wednesday night.

Bourne needed 11 points entering the contest to reach the milestone. He scored three baskets in the paint early in the game, added a layup with 6:47 to go in the half, and then scored another basket in the key a minute later. He drew a foul on the made basket and successfully buried the resulting free throw for an even 1,000 points. Bourne scored on his first seven field goal attempts and finished 8-for-10 from the floor and finished with 17 points and seven rebounds.

Swarthmore sophomore guard Cam Wiley reached 20 points for the fourth time in five games, dropping 22 points on Wednesday. He shot 6-for-10 from the floor, with four of those buckets coming from 3-point range. Wiley went 6-for-8 from the free throw line.

Junior Zack Yonda added 13 points and is poised to be the next Garnet player to reach 1,000 points in his career. Yonda is 18 points shy of the millennial mark.

The Garnet made 46 percent of their field goal attempts (23-for-50), two percent above their season average. Swarthmore's defense limited the visiting Mules to a 27.3 percent shooting night from the floor and just 19 percent from 3-point range. Freshman Nate Shafer notched three blocks in the win. He continues to lead the conference in blocks per game with 2.3.

Swarthmore built a double-digit lead in the first 10 minutes of the first half and stretched the lead to 20 by halftime following a personal 5-0 spurt by Wiley in the final minute. The Garnet cruised through the second half en route to a 70-50 win.

The Garnet improved to 10-3 in Centennial Conference play, keeping pace with Johns Hopkins for a tie for the best record in the league. The Garnet travel to McDaniel College on Saturday for a 3 p.m. game.
