Women's Soccer Advances To Title Game

SWARTHMORE, Pa.—A late goal from sophomore Sydney Covitz elevated Swarthmore College Women's Soccer past Haverford College in the Centennial Conference Semifinals on Saturday night. The Garnet's 2-1 win put them in the Centennial Championship game for the third time in four seasons.

Swarthmore (14-3-1), the second seed in the tournament, plays host and top-seed Johns Hopkins University for the title on Sunday at 4 p.m.

The Garnet scored first, netting a goal in the 23rd minute off a free kick in the 23rd minute. McCoy drew a foul in the center of the field from about 21 yards out. She took the resulting kick and struck a left-footed shot into the upper left corner of the goal. The goal was McCoy's 17th on the year, tying Katie Kanuka's school record set in 2006.

Most of the play in the first half was fought for in the midfield. Haverford had two total shots in the first and Swarthmore posted four in the period. Haverford took two more shots in the second and Swarthmore rattled off 12 attempts.

Haverford's Leanne Ludwick scored in the 69th minute on a strike from just inside the 18.

With the score tied at 1-1, the Garnet stepped up the attack. Sarah Hancock launched a long-range shot in the 72nd minute, and in the 73rd minute Marin McCoy had a shot turned away. Hannah Lichtenstein put up an attempt in the 79th minute, but Swarthmore finally broke the draw in the 85th minute. Katie Dougherty located Covitz on the left wing, finishing near post for her third goal of the season.

The Garnet held on for the final five minutes to secure the 2-1 win.
