CHESTERTOWN, Md.–
Audra Woodside scored 16 points and collected eight rebounds as the Swarthmore College basketball team fell by a 71-38 score to Washington College in its Centennial Conference opener on Tuesday, Nov. 21.
The Garnet defense prevented the Shorewomen from scoring behind the arc, but Swarthmore was unable to find its own rhythm on the other end of the court. Woodside shot 50 percent of the field (7-of-14) and grabbed three boards on the offensive glass.
Abigail Pirron dished four assists while
Elizabeth Stiles and
Abigail Posta pocketed two steals apiece.
Christina Holmgren scored on the opening possession of the game, but the advantage was short-lived as Washington grabbed a lead it would not relinquish. Woodside scored six consecutive points for Swarthmore before the Shorewomen ended the quarter with a 20-10 margin, which they doubled before half time. Washington continued to build its lead in the third and fourth quarters and ultimately handed the Garnet their first conference loss of the season.
The women's basketball team resumes competition after the Thanksgiving holiday with a 7 p.m. home game against Muhlenberg on Tuesday, Nov. 28.
