SWARTHMORE, Pa.–Despite playing the Widener Pride evenly in the second half, the Swarthmore College women's basketball fell 91-57 in its season opener on Wednesday, Nov. 15.
Widener built up a 55-21 lead by halftime that it would not relinquish. Twenty-one turnovers plagued the Garnet and Widener capitalized to the tune of 30 points.
For the Garnet,
Raina Williams scored 19 points and pulled down 10 rebounds, including five on the offensive glass. Williams converted on seven of her 10 trips to the line and was 6-of-13 from the field overall.
Audra Woodside also hit in double figures with 10 points on 5-for-11 shooting.
Lindsay O'Sullivan and
Elizabeth Stiles each scored eight points, while Stiles also dished out four assists.
Swarthmore faced a large deficit at the break and went to work in the third. Williams recorded six points in the quarter, but the Garnet were unable to trim their deficit down. In the fourth, Williams started things off with three points before freshman
Kendall Tribus followed up with four consecutive points of her own. Although Swarthmore fell to Widener, the young team showed signs of improvement in the second half with stronger defending and fewer turnovers.
The Garnet look to rebound on Friday when they host Houghton in the opening game of the Swarthmore Tip-Off on Friday, Nov. 17 at 5 p.m.
