SWARTHMORE, Pa.—No. 25 Swarthmore College Men's Basketball dazzled from beyond the 3-point arc in Wednesday's 2017-18 season opener against Hood College.
Led by nine 3-pointers from freshman Conor Harkins, the Garnet connected on 20-of-35 (57.1 percent) long-range attempts in the 111-89 win over Hood.
The pace of play was frenetic on Wednesday with Hood implementing a full-court press throughout. Neither team wasted time in putting up shots.
Swarthmore shot slightly better from distance than from the field overall (55.6 percent). The Garnet defense did hold the Blazers to 36.8 percent overall and 28.1 percent from 3-point territory.
Harkins, who scored all of his game-high 27 points from behind the 3-point line, did so after coming into the game off the bench.
Five other Garnet players reached double-figures in scoring. Both Zac O'Dell and Cam Wiley scored 19 points off of 6-of-8 shooting.
Robbie Walsh posted 15 points and had a team-high nine rebounds. Zack Yonda pitched in 10 markers as did freshman Ryan Ingram.
Walsh finished with five blocks and O'Dell erased four shots.
Swarthmore, last year's top rebounding team in the country, got off to a good start this year by out-rebounding Hood 47-31.
The Garnet never trailed on Wednesday and had a lead as large as 36 points in the second half. The 111 points scored is the most in a game for Swarthmore since scoring 117 against Redlands to open the 2002-03 season.
Swarthmore returns to action on Saturday at home against Albertus Magnus College for a 6 p.m. tilt.
