GENEVA, N.Y.—No. 24 Swarthmore College Women's Soccer's 2017 NCAA Tournament trip reached in the second round on Sunday, but the Garnet had a tough draw in the bracket and had to face No. 2 William Smith College on their home grass field. The hosting Herons scored two goals in the first half to secure a 2-0 win and eliminate the Garnet from the tournament.
William Smith found the back of the net early, scoring on a long-range strike 3:14 into the game.
Swarthmore dealt with the early blow and responded with consistent offensive pressure. The Garnet recorded seven shots in the first period, including four on goal.
William Smith added its second goal in the 40th minute, taking advantage of muddy field conditions.
Sydney Covitz put a shot on goal for the Garnet early in the second half, and had another shot two minutes later zip just over top of the crossbar. Swarthmore took 11 shots in the game, but were surprisingly held without a corner kick for the first time this season.
Amy Shmoys came up with four more saves in the second period for a total of six in the contest.
