SWARTHMORE, Pa.--Swarthmore College Women's Soccer out-scored the visiting Muhlenberg College Mules 3-2 on Wednesday night and moved into sole possession of second place in the Centennial Conference.
The Garnet (13-3 overall, 7-2 Centennial) had a commanding 2-0 lead by the 13th minute and added a third insurance goal, which proved to be the game-winner, in the 62nd minute. Muhlenberg surged late, scoring in the 62nd minute as well and in the 89th minute.
The Garnet out-shot the Mules 18-10 and both teams had six shots on goal.
Lizzie King put Swarthmore on the board in the eighth minute with her sixth goal of the season. King won a ball away from a defender on the right wing and worked her way into the box for the score from about eight yards out.
In the 13th minute, freshman
Amy Harris, who got the start in the midfield, sent a great through ball to McCoy who finished with a sliding shot from the left side before the goalie could close out on her. McCoy's goal was her league-leading 16th on the season.
Sarah Hancock added to Swarthmore's total in the 62nd minute.
Katie Dougherty managed to get a pass back from the right side of the box to Hancock near the 18 for the driven shot and the score.
Muhlenberg added two goals late but couldn't catch the Garnet.
Amy Shmoys played 80 minutes in goal and recorded four saves in the win.
Sommer Denison closed out the final 10 minutes in goal.
Swarthmore concludes the regular season at Haverford on Saturday at 1 p.m.
