Garnet Volleyball Downs Washington College In Three

CHESTERTOWN, Md.–The Swarthmore College volleyball team (16-6, 5-2 CC) rolled to a convincing 3-0 victory over the Washington College Shorewomen on Tuesday, Oct. 17. The Garnet earned their 14th sweep of the season by a 25-12, 25-12, 25-23 score.

The Shorewomen hit negative in the first two sets, posting attack percentages of -.098 and -.043 respectively.  In the first frame, Swarthmore had a series of runs to keep the hosts out of reach. With a 17-9 lead, the team won six straight and later closed out the set on a kill by Sarah Wallace.

The second set followed a similar script as the Garnet used a 7-0 tear to open a double-digit lead at 20-10. Mehra den Braven led the offense with six kills and only one error in the frame while Emma Morgan-Bennett added three. Four service aces and three blocks also stymied the Shorewomen, who struggled to recover after the momentum shift in Swarthmore's favor.

The hosts, however, bounced back for a competitive, back-and-forth affair in the final set, which had 11 ties. Sarah Girard and Malia Scott anchored the defense with a combined 14 of the team's 24 digs in the set. Swarthmore created some separation at 18-14 on Scott's serve, but four straight points by the Shorewomen led to a tie game and a timeout. The Garnet took two out of the break before Washington countered by taking the next three. The teams traded points until 23 apiece when a kill by den Braven and a block from Wallace and Morgan-Bennett concluded the match.

Scott notched a double-double with 27 assists and 13 digs while den Braven led all players with 12 kills. Morgan-Bennett and Olivia Leventhal followed closely in that category with eight and seven, respectively.

Swarthmore hosts Gettysburg and Scranton in a tri-match on Saturday, Oct. 21 at 12 and 4 pm, respectively. The team will celebrate its five seniors (Malia Scott, Olivia Leventhal, Bridget Scott, Sarah Wallace and Alice Liu) and their contributions as the winningest class in program history.
