Volleyball Extends Win Streak With Sweep Of Dickinson

CARLISLE, Pa.–On the road against Dickinson, the Swarthmore College volleyball team (11-1, 3-0 CC) won its 11th consecutive match and remained undefeated against Centennial Conference opponents after dispatching the Red Devils by a 25-21, 25-15, 25-16 score.

Swarthmore served up 11 aces, with three apiece from sophomore Guin Mesh and Elise Cummings, and limited Dickinson to a paltry .024 hitting percentage to claim the match in a little over an hour. Freshman Emma Morgan-Bennett swung six kills and recorded three solo blocks while Sarah Wallace, the reigning conference player of the week, totaled a match-high 10 kills.

Cummings and Malia Scott handed out 15 and 11 assists, respectively, and Sarah Girard hit double digits in digs for the 11th time this season with 13.

In the first set, the Red Devils went on a six-point run to take a 15-12 lead and force a Swarthmore timeout. At 19-16 for the hosts, Morgan-Bennett buried two consecutive kills to help shift the momentum in favor of the Garnet. After a Dickinson timeout, Swarthmore claimed six of the next eight points, which featured two blocks by freshman Rachel Vresilovic, and closed the set on an ace by Cummings.

The Garnet posted an impressive .308 hitting percentage in the second frame while holding the hosts to a -.077 mark on six kills and eight errors in 26 attempts. Swarthmore opened the set with consecutive kills by Mehra den Braven and trailed only once before a six-point run turned the tide.

The team committed only one attack error in the final set and used six service aces to make put away the Red Devils for good.

Swarthmore resumes competition in a week when it hosts Johns Hopkins at Tarble Pavilion on Saturday, Oct. 1.
