ASTON, Pa.–Junior outside hitter
Sarah Wallace buried her 1,000th kill and the Swarthmore College volleyball team (9-1) finished 4-0 as the champions of the Neumann Knights Invitational on Saturday, Sep. 17. The Garnet have won nine consecutive matches and have not dropped a set over that span.
Wallace was named the tournament MVP and was joined on the All-Tournament team by sophomore setter
Elise Cummings. Swarthmore began the day sweeping Moravian by a 25-19, 25-17, 25-19 score and concluded the invitational with a 25-22, 25-20, 25-15, straight-sets victory against Catholic.
The Garnet hit an impressive .358 against the Moravian Greyhounds with 49 kills and 11 errors in 106 attempts. Wallace buried 15 kills and committed only one error to go with five digs and four block assists. Freshman
Mehra den Braven also swung 15 kills at a .444 clip and Cummings compiled a double-double with a team-high 22 assists and 14 digs. Libero
Sarah Girard also recorded 14 digs and
Malia Scott had 20 digs, five assists and three service aces.
Against Catholic, Swarthmore served up 11 aces (six from sophomore
Guin Mesh) and hit .291 to pick up the sweep. Wallace, den Braven and
Olivia Leventhal each swung 11 kills and den Braven nearly reached a double-double with nine digs. Girard led the team in that category with 13 as Cummings handed out 37 of the team's 41 assists. Wallace,
Emma Morgan-Bennett and
Rachel Vresilovic all netted two block assists for the Garnet.
Swarthmore resumes Centennial Conference competition on Wednesday, Sep. 21 when the team hosts Franklin & Marshall at 7:30 p.m. in Tarble Pavilion.
