LANCASTER, Pa.—With one minute left on Saturday at Franklin & Marshall College, sophomore Cam Marsh scored to bring Swarthmore College Men's Lacrosse into an 8-8 deadlock with the Diplomats. F&M, however, went on to score the sudden victory goal 1:18 into the first overtime. With the 9-8 loss, Swarthmore dips to 7-5 (2-3 Centennial).
Marsh, who scored all of his team-high three goals in the second half, evened the score with each goal. Matt Johnson added two goals for Swarthmore, and Dylan Rittenhouse, Nathan Relich and Braeden DeWan all found the back of the net once. DeWan distributed three assists to finish with four points.
Swarthmore started out on fire, scorching F&M for four straight goals in the first quarter. Marsh set up Johnson with 13:23 to play in the first for goal number one. Rittenhouse followed less than a minute later with a goal off an assist from Griffin Johnston. Johnson got his second of the game with 10:26 to go. Relich chimed in with a highlight-reel goal with 3:31 remaining, slipping a shot between his own legs and past the Diplomats' goalie—things were looking good for Swarthmore. The Diplomats had offensive chances in the first quarter, but were denied by three Cole Fox saves and two shots off the post.
The second quarter belonged to F&M; the Diplomats retaliated with a 4-0 period. They made it a 5-0 run with a goal four minutes into the third quarter. Swarthmore ended its scoring drought with 9:25 to play in the third, tying the game at 5-5 with a Cam Marsh goal.
The Diplomats and Garnet traded goals again in the third. DeWan tied the game at 6-6 with 3:17 remaining in the quarter. In the fourth, after F&M took an early lead, Swarthmore tied the game at 7-7 with 4:44 to go. Jimmy Eberle sparked a fastbreak with a caused turnover. Relich then found Marsh for the fastbreak goal.
F&M scored off a rebounded shot with 2:22 to play, but at the start of the final minute, Marsh snuck in from behind the net to catch a pass from Rittenhouse and flushed it to equalize the score. Rittenhouse had a chance to win it in the final seconds of regulation, but his shot was saved.
F&M maintained possession in the brief overtime period. Sean Rogers scored the game-winner and completed his hat trick with 2:42 to go in overtime.
