All-Around Effort Keys Series Sweep Of Washington

SWARTHMORE, Pa.–For the second time in three days, the Swarthmore College baseball team (18-10, 2-4 CC) earned a conference win over the Washington College Shoremen (17-6-1, 1-3 CC) as the Garnet cruised to a 10-1 win on Friday, April 15.

Swarthmore excelled in all facets of the game with strong showings from its offense, defense and pitching. Nico Aldaco finished with three hits and three RBIs as Wesley Fishburn and Conor Elliott each collected a base of pair hits.

In centerfield, Ryan Burnett left his feet for two impressive catches and the defense turned three double plays, including a web gem in the sixth that began with running snag and glove flip by Fishburn.

On the mound, Nate Booth handled the Shoremen for his fifth win of the year, allowing three hits and no earned runs in six frames. Jackson Ramey and Max Kassan each surrendered just one hit and zero runs in relief.

Washington struck first in the second inning, but its lead was short-lived as Swarthmore tacked on three runs in the bottom of the frame. Jackson Roberts singled and later scored on a failed pickoff and Charles Levitt drove in Elliott and Steven Matos-Torres with a single to right field. In the third, Swarthmore put another run on the board as Aldaco drove in Roy Walker, but was out at second trying to stretch a single.

The Garnet broke the game open in the fifth with four runs on four hits. Burnett plated Levitt with a deep double to left field and eventually crossed the plate after another failed pickoff. Aldaco hit a two-RBI single to give Swarthmore a commanding 8-1 advantage.

The baseball team has a busy weekend ahead with consecutive conference doubleheaders, beginning with a pair of games at Johns Hopkins on Saturday, April 16. First pitch is scheduled for 12:30 p.m
