GETTYSBURG, Pa.—Nationally-ranked Gettysburg College proved to be a challenge for the visiting Swarthmore College men's lacrosse team on Sunday afternoon. The No. 9 Bullets opened the first half with nine unanswered goals. The Garnet posted four goals in the second half, but couldn't completely recover. Swarthmore fell 14-4 and dipped to 6-4 on the season. Gettysburg improved to 7-2.
Nathan Relich scored a team-high two goals for Swarthmore, increasing his season total to a team-best 17. Cam Marsh and Will Black scored the Garnet's remaining goals.
Trailing 9-0 entering the second half, the Garnet took advantage of a Gettysburg penalty that carried over into the third quarter. Relich, set up by Cam Marsh, dropped in the Garnet's first goal 26 seconds into the period and with four seconds remaining on the extra-man opportunity.
Will Black scored his sixth goal of the year, again assisted by Marsh, just over three minutes later.
Marsh capped off the Garnet's quick scoring burst with 10:13 left in the third, making it 9-3.
Gettysburg then scored five straight to put the game out of reach. Relich netted his second of the day with 7:33 to go in the fourth, halting Gettysburg's streak.
Gettysburg peppered Swarthmore with 47 shots, with 26 of them going on goal. Swarthmore posted 19 shots total and 14 on goal.
Swarthmore won the faceoff category 12-9. Stephen Ducey went 8-for-13 and Mike Selverian was 4-for-8.
The Garnet host McDaniel on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
