Softball Rallies In Game Two In Split At Wesley

DOVER, Del.—The Swarthmore College softball team (1-1) bounced back from a 7-0 defeat in the first game of the afternoon to pick up a 10-0 rout against Wesley College (2-2) on Sunday, Feb. 28, the team's opening day for 2016.

Junior Anna Jensen finished the day with three hits, including two doubles, and two RBIs. Marit Vike, Sara Planthaber, Bekah Katz, Frankie Ponziani and Christen Boas Hayes each collected two hits as Vike, Elizabeth Curcio and Amanda Lopez had strong outings on the base path with two runs apiece. In game two, Emily Bowman struck out five and did not surrender a run for the complete-game win, the first of her Swarthmore career.

The Garnet struggled early in the afternoon as they allowed four runs in the first inning and failed to capitalize on scoring opportunities in the second and third frames. Jensen's double in the seventh gave Swarthmore some life, but pinch runner Lopez was eventually stranded at third.

The visitors flipped the script, however, in the nightcap with a seven-run outburst in the second. Jensen singled and pinch runner Hannah Thompson made it all the way to third on a stolen base and an error by the Wesley shortstop. Ponziani's base hit drove her in and walks by Lopez, Vike and Curcio added another tally to the board. Planthaber drilled a two-RBI double before Boas Hayes made it 5-0 with a single to left field. Jensen completed the scoring behind another double down the left field line as Swarthmore took a commanding 7-0 lead.

Bowman remained solid on the mound and the Garnet offense added three more runs in the third. Curcio hit a bases-clearing double, driving in Vike and Lopez, and Katz brought her home with a single to left. Wesley put only one runner in scoring position for the remainder of the game as Bowman and the Garnet defense made life difficult for the Wolverines.

The softball team resumes competition over Spring Break in Fort Myers, Fla. with a game against Rockford on Sunday, March 6. First pitch is scheduled for 9:00 a.m.
