Garnet Drop Home Game To No. 15 Muhlenberg

SWARTHMORE, Pa.–The Swarthmore College women's basketball team (5-19, 3-14 CC) fell 75-57 to the 15th-ranked Muhlenberg College Mules (21-2, 15-2 CC) in its penultimate game of the season on Wednesday, Feb. 17.

Junior Maggie O'Neil stuffed the stat sheet with nine points, nine rebounds, four steals and a game-high five blocks. Senior Jessica Jowdy dropped in a team-high 15 points as sophomore Raina Williams also scored in double figures with 11. Abbey Deckard just missed out on a double-double on nine points and eight rebounds. Swarthmore grabbed 49 rebounds, including 23 on the offensive glass, and forced 21 turnovers by the Mules.

The Garnet led for the first 3:30 of the contest as O'Neil and Williams got the team off to a strong start. Muhlenberg, however, used a 10-run to gain lead it would not relinquish for the remainder of the game. Hayley Raymond and Bridgett Scott each scored two points in the quarter to keep Swarthmore within single digits and the Mules took a 21-15 advantage into the second.

The visitors opened the quarter with eight straight points to gain some distance and ended the period with a 16-point lead. Nevertheless, Swarthmore increased the intensity in the second half and were outscored by only two points in the final two quarters.

Jowdy and Williams combined for 10 points in the third as the Garnet held the Mules to 3-of-15 shooting and caused seven turnovers. In the fourth, Deckard drained three shots from downtown for nine of the team's 14 points, but Swarthmore could not make up the deficit as it fell to 5-19 overall.

The team returns to Tarble Pavilion for its final game of the season to host rival Haverford on Saturday, Feb. 20. Prior to the 12:30 p.m. tipoff, seniors Jowdy and Deckard will be honored, and at halftime, members of the Centennial Conference-champion 2000-01 women's basketball team will also be recognized.
