CHESTERTOWN, Md.—Led by 20 points from sophomore forward
Robbie Walsh, Swarthmore College Men's Basketball stormed past the Washington College Shoremen 84-62 on Wednesday night.
Swarthmore improved to 17-5 (10-5 Centennial) on the year, matching the program-best set in the 1990-91 season. The Garnet need one more win or a Johns Hopkins loss to guarantee a spot in the Centennial Conference Tournament.
Walsh shot a perfect 8-for-8 from the floor and went 4-for-5 from the free-throw line. Walsh flirted with a triple-double, pulling down eight rebounds and blocking seven shots in 26 minutes of play.
In addition to Walsh, three other Garnet players reached double-figures on the evening.
Sean Thaxter added 12 points and four rebounds from the other post position. Freshman guard
Cam Wiley scored 11 points on 4-of-6 shooting for his first foray into double-digit territory.
Matt Brennan registered 10 points for the Garnet.
Swarthmore shot 48.1 percent from the floor and 39.1 percent from 3-point range. The Garnet contained the Shoremen to a 37.7 percent shooting rate from the floor.
The battle of the boards belonged to the Garnet as well, as they grabbed 41 rebounds to the Shoremen's 29.
Swarthmore never trailed in the contest and pushed to a 15-point lead with 9:07 to go in the first after
Henry Cousineau knocked down a 3-pointer. Swarthmore's lead remained at 15 going into the half and then reached as high as 24 points in the second half.
The Garnet travel to Dickinson College on Saturday for a 4 p.m. game.
