SWARTHMORE, Pa.–Despite scoring 27 points in the second quarter, the Swarthmore College women's basketball team (0-1) fell by a 66-61 score to the visiting Rosemont Ravens (1-0) in its season opener on Tuesday, Nov. 18.
Thirteen different players saw the court for the Garnet, which held a wide 46-2 bench scoring margin over the Ravens. First-year
Lindsay O'Sullivan impressed in her collegiate debut with 15 points, two steals and one block in 26 minutes and junior
Melanie Ackerman drained three treys en route to 13 points.
Raina Williams handed out a pair of rejections and
Maggie O'Neil and
Abigail Pirron each chipped in four steals.
Swarthmore trailed 16-13 after the first before coming alive in the second.
Kemi Oladipo started things off with two consecutive baskets and makes by O'Neil and
Kayla Sembly completed a nine-point run.
A layup by O'Sullivan gave the Garnet their largest lead of the evening at 38-26 with 1:43 left in the quarter, but the Ravens countered with a nine-point run of their own to remain within striking distance. Pirron made a layup as time expired to give the hosts a 40-35 lead heading into the break.
In the third, neither team was able to score for the final three minutes and Rosemont took a narrow, 52-49 advantage into the final quarter. Swarthmore regained the lead after a pair of freebies by
Audra Woodside and Oladipo's layup and eventually stretch its lead to six after freshman
Elizabeth Stiles converted two from the line. The Ravens, however, scored the final 11 points of the game and handed the young Garnet a loss in their 2016-17 debut.
Swarthmore will host its Annual Tip-Off Tournament on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 18-19. The Garnet first host Geneva at 5 p.m. on Friday.
