SWARTHMORE, Pa.—The 2016 campaign, the 100th season in Swarthmore College Men's Soccer history, concluded on Saturday afternoon with a rivalry match against No. 22 Haverford College. The Garnet battled the visiting Fords, but Haverford emerged with the 1-0 win, scoring the game-winner in the 76th minute.
Garnet goalkeeper
Michael Thut recorded six saves, snagging four in the first half. The Garnet were unable to put a shot on goal, but had nine total attempts in the game.
Haverford's goal followed a corner kick right at the end of the 76th minute as Russell Nicholson leapt to head in goal from the right side of the box. The Fords held a 6-4 advantage in corner plays Saturday.
Swarthmore honored seniors
Billy Evers,
Ryan Meuth and
Michael Swantek prior to the contest. The team wore black t-shirts with the nickname "Swanny" on the back in support of Swantek whose playing career was cut short because of injury.
Swarthmore (7-10-1, 3-6 Centennial) was a very young team in 2016 with 20 underclassmen and had eight freshmen start multiple games in 2016. The Garnet hope that the experience gained this season will translate to success in the years to follow.
