SWARTHMORE, Pa.–A goal by
Melissa Zavez in the last minute of regulation forced overtime for the Swarthmore College field hockey team, but the visiting Fords netted the game-winner just one minute into the extra period and came away with a 3-2 win on Saturday, Oct. 29.
Prior to the match the Garnet honored the four members of its senior class:
Kat Baryenbruch,
Jordyn Bell,
Katherine Ianni and
Ursula Monaghan.
Sophomore
Zelda Bank wrapped up a strong season between the pipes with 15 saves to keep Swarthmore within striking distance. At 53:55, Bell netted her fifth goal of the season off a pass from her classmate Ianni after the Fords took a 2-0 lead.
Bank made two more saves and Swarthmore unleashed a flurry of shots in the closing moments of the game after a series of penalty corners and finally broke through when Zavez finished off a rebound off Monaghan's shot to secure the equalizer.
In overtime, the Fords' Lucy Tortolani converted a breakaway opportunity and Swarthmore fell to 5-13 on the season with a 1-9 mark against conference competition.
The Garnet are slated to return 14 letterwinners for the 2017 season.
