Haverford Edges Field Hockey In Senior Day Finale

SWARTHMORE, Pa.–A goal by Melissa Zavez in the last minute of regulation forced overtime for the Swarthmore College field hockey team, but the visiting Fords netted the game-winner just one minute into the extra period and came away with a 3-2 win on Saturday, Oct. 29.

Prior to the match the Garnet honored the four members of its senior class: Kat Baryenbruch, Jordyn Bell, Katherine Ianni and Ursula Monaghan.

Sophomore Zelda Bank wrapped up a strong season between the pipes with 15 saves to keep Swarthmore within striking distance. At 53:55, Bell netted her fifth goal of the season off a pass from her classmate Ianni after the Fords took a 2-0 lead.

Bank made two more saves and Swarthmore unleashed a flurry of shots in the closing moments of the game after a series of penalty corners and finally broke through when Zavez finished off a rebound off Monaghan's shot to secure the equalizer.

In overtime, the Fords' Lucy Tortolani converted a breakaway opportunity and Swarthmore fell to 5-13 on the season with a 1-9 mark against conference competition.

The Garnet are slated to return 14 letterwinners for the 2017 season.
