Box Score SWARTHMORE, Pa.—No. 22 Swarthmore College Women's Soccer picked up another Centennial Conference win on Thursday evening, moving closer to a playoff berth. One more Garnet win this season or a loss by the Muhlenberg University Mules would lock up one of the five available postseason seeds for the Garnet.
The Garnet (12-1, 5-1 Centennial) edged the visiting Ursinus College Bears 1-0, scoring the game-winner in the 34th minute. The Bears fell to 4-7-1, 2-4 Centennial.
Senior forward Hannah Lichtenstein provided the difference on a highlight-reel goal. From just beyond the 18, Katie Dougherty curled an impeccable pass in towards the penalty kick dot. Lichtenstein, who had her back to the goal and her defender sealed behind her, snapped her left foot up, connecting with the pass in the air and volleying in the over-the-shoulder shot. Lichtenstein now has five goals on the season.
Both teams recorded a number of offensive chances in the contest. Ursinus took 19 shots to Swarthmore's 18, and both teams finished with eight shots on goal. Swarthmore sophomore Amy Shmoys recorded her fifth win, and fifth shutout, of the season while tallying a career-high eight saves. Shmoys came up with a leaping save in the 68th minute, punching a shot over the crossbar to maintain the shutout.
Shmoys got some help from freshman Sydney Covitz in the 86th minute to keep the shutout intact as Covitz slid hard to stop a breakaway on the left wing.
The Garnet recorded their 10th clean sheet of the season.
Swarthmore plays at home on Saturday at 3 p.m. against McDaniel College.
