Women’s Basketball Faces Setback Against Gettysburg

SWARTHMORE, Pa. – Sophomore forward Raina Williams poured in a career-high 21 points on 8-of-12 shooting, but it was not enough as the Swarthmore women's basketball team (3-8, 2-3 CC) fell 54-72 to the visiting Gettysburg Bullets (7-2, 2-2 CC) on Thursday, Jan. 7.

Williams used a variety of post moves as the game's leading scorer and added two blocks and three rebounds on the evening. Senior Jessica Jowdy contributed 15 points, six rebounds, five assists, and three steals while classmate Abbey Deckard grabbed seven boards and four steals.

The Garnet made it first three shots of the game as Williams, Maggie O'Neil, and Hayley Raymond scored to give Swarthmore an early 7-3 lead. Gettysburg evened the score soon after, but back-to-back treys by Jowdy and Deckard restored the team's four-point advantage.  The visitors, however, closed the quarter on a 10-0 run and took a 22-15 lead in to the second.

Jowdy scored six in the second period and Gettysburg led 37-27 at the intermission. Williams came alive in the third, notching 12 consecutive points with 4-of-5 marks from both the field and the charity stripe to keep Swarthmore in the game. Unfortunately, the Bullets' lead was insurmountable as the Garnet picked up their fourth consecutive loss.

The women's basketball team looks to snap its losing streak when it heads to conference foe Franklin & Marshall on Saturday, Jan. 9 for a 1:00 p.m. game. Swarthmore beat F&M 74-53 earlier this season and has won the last seven meetings against the Diplomats.
