HAVERFORD, Pa.-Swarthmore College Men's Basketball fought off a second-half run from the Haverford College Fords to take Wednesday night's rivalry game 66-52.
The Garnet accelerated to a 12-2 run in the second half to put the Fords in the rearview mirror with 6:50 to play.
Swarthmore improved to 15-3 (9-2 Centennial), while Haverford slipped to 3-14 (1-9).
Matt Brennan led the Garnet with 14 points.
Robbie Walsh and
Sean Thaxter recorded double-digits with 12 points and 10 points, respectively.
Sam Lebryk and
Zack Yonda added nine points. Haverford's Joe Scibelli scored a game-high 16 points.
Swarthmore was out-shot by the Fords overall and from behind the arc, but Swarthmore earned 35 free-throw attempts and converted 29 of them (82.9 percent).
The Garnet grabbed 46 rebounds to the Fords' 32 boards. Freshman
Henry Cousineau had a team-high nine rebounds. A pair of free throws by Cousineau with 6:41 remaining in the first half gave Swarthmore its first double-digit lead of the game. At halftime, Swarthmore's lead was 28-22.
Haverford's Scibelli knocked down a 3-pointer 11 seconds into the second half and trimmed Swarthmore's lead to three. Scibelli hit another trey on the next possession to even the game at 28-28. Haverford led 38-37 with 10:50 to play, but Swarthmore rallied on the next possession when Brennan dropped a 3-pointer to put Swarthmore back in the lead 40-38.
The 3-pointer sparked a 12-2 run. With 8:34 to play, Brennan was undercut shooting a trey at the top of the arc and then hit all three free throws.
Sam Lebryk capped the run with 6:50 to play when he hit a 3-pointer that gave Swarthmore a 49-40 lead. The Garnet only went 3-for-18 (16.7 percent) from beyond the arc, but the two treys in the run proved to be crucial for Swarthmore to gain some separation from Haverford.
Swarthmore returns to the court on Saturday for a home game with Johns Hopkins University at 3 p.m.
