BALTIMORE – Road woes continued for the Swarthmore College women's basketball team (3-10, 2-5 CC) as the Garnet fell by a 44-57 score to the Johns Hopkins Blue Jays (4-8, 2-4 CC) on Tuesday, Jan. 12.
Sophomore
Bridget Scott scored a team-high 13 points and senior
Jessica Jowdy also finished in double figures with 10 points.
Raina Williams collected eight boards, including four on the offensive glass, as
Abbey Deckard grabbed four steals.
Maggie O'Neil had a solid defensive effort with three rejections and three steals for the Garnet.
Swarthmore scored the first seven points of the game behind two layups by
Hayley Raymond and a trey from O'Neil. Scott also totaled four points in the quarter, but the Jays chipped away at the lead and took a 16-14 advantage in the final 90 seconds. A last-second bucket by Jowdy kept the game even entering the second. Unfortunately for the Garnet, their offense went cold and managed only two points in the period.
The team bounced back in the third with 14 points, but was unable to reduce the Johns Hopkins lead. In the final quarter, the Jays scored the first five points to push their advantage to 18 and kept the margin as the teams traded baskets. Swarthmore scored the final five points of the contest, with three coming from Jowdy, to provide the final result.
The Garnet look to snap a six-game losing streak on Thursday, Jan. 14 when they host Dickinson College at Tarble Pavilion. Tip-off is set for 6:00 p.m.
