Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Garnet Nipped By Hopkins; Reserves Spark Late Comeback Attempt

SWARTHMORE, Pa.— Swarthmore College Men's Soccer notched two goals late in Saturday's home game with Johns Hopkins University to give themselves a chance to tie with seven minutes remaining. However, Hopkins had too much ground on the Garnet and held on to take the game 3-2.

Both goals were tallied by freshman reserve players. Saadiq Garba headed in a pass from classmate Kyle Richmond-Crosset in the 79th minute for the Garnet's first goal, snapping the team's three-game scoring dry spell. Less than four minutes later, Richmond-Crosset, seeing time for the third game this season, made his minutes count by knocking in the Garnet's second goal to pull the Garnet within one.

The Garnet out-shot the Blue Jays 19-8 in the match. Swarthmore took eight first half-shots within the first 41 minutes of scoreless play. One of those attempts was on goal, a close-range attempt by Yuheng Wang, however, that shot was blocked on the goal line by a Hopkins' defender.

Hopkins' Kenny DeStefano, who had entered the game 10 minutes earlier, shot a screamer from 25 yards out that got past Swarthmore's Tyler Zon and gave the Hopkins the 1-0 lead with three minutes to play in the first half. Blue Jay Andrew Park snuck in the second goal with 15 seconds left in the half.

The Garnet put five more unresolved shots on goal in the second half, and once again had an attempt that would have gone in had it not been stopped on the goal line by the body of a Hopkins' defender. The Blue Jays extended their to 3-0 in the 55th minute after a quick touch off a corner kick led to Drew Collins' goal.

Trailing 3-0, the Garnet continued to work in players off the bench. The Garnet finally hit pay dirt in the 79th minute. Richmond-Crosset crossed the ball in from the left wing to Garba. Garba, with his back facing the goal, flicked in a header from near the 18 that lobbed over the reach of See and dropped into the goal.

Finding new life, the Garnet soon scored again. Wyatt McCall sent a long ball into the box that was corralled by See in front of the goal. However, the ball escaped See's grasp on the catch and Richmond-Crosset flushed the loose ball from the doorstep.

The Garnet had one last attempt to tie the game in the 88th minute. Rodrigo Hernandez took a hard shot from near the 18 through traffic, but Hopkins' goalkeeper made a diving save to keep their lead intact.

Swarthmore slides to 3-6 with the loss and 0-2 in conference play. The Garnet have two Centennial tests next week. They host Muhlenberg College at 7 p.m. on Wednesday and travel to Ursinus College at noon on Saturday.
