Caroline Khanna and freshman
Marin McCoy both tallied three points with one goal and one assist apiece as
Claire O'Brien and
Katie Dougherty also found the back of the net for the Garnet.
Swarthmore raced ahead to an early lead with Khanna's goal in the 10th minute after the midfielder buried a pass from
Hannah Lichtenstein in the far corner of the net. The Garnet doubled up shortly after at 16:34 when O'Brien took a pass from inside the box and beat the Pride keeper for the first goal of her collegiate career. Khanna and
Melissa Trofa were credited with assists on the play.
Swarthmore pressured Widener's backline for the entirety of the game and registered 32 shots, 14 of them on goal, to its opponent's two. The team broke through again in the 36th minute for a 3-0 lead behind Dougherty's goal from McCoy. Eight minutes later, McCoy slotted home a pass from classmate
Caroline Meier to give the Garnet a 4-0 advantage just before halftime.
The Pride had no answer for the unrelenting attack in the second half and managed one shot on goal in the 82nd minute, which was turned away by senior
Caela Long. Long and classmate
Reba Magier split time in net and combined for a shutout on the hot Tuesday afternoon.
The Garnet return to action on Saturday, Sept. 5 when they host Neumann University in the Swat Kick Classic. Action begins on Clothier Field at 1 p.m.
