Box Score SWARTHMORE, Pa. – Senior
Elle Larsen recorded her eighth double-double of the season and junior
Jessica Jowdy added 19 points to lead the Swarthmore College women's basketball team to a 65-56 win over Ursinus on Wednesday, Feb. 4 at Tarble Pavilion.
Swarthmore got on the board first when
Maggie O'Neil drained a 3-pointer and led throughout the first half. A good jumper by Larsen extended the Garnet advantage to double digits at 19-9 with 8:42 to play before Jowdy drove down the court and drilled a buzzer-beating 3-pointer to give the hosts a commanding 37-21 lead at the break.
Ursinus (7-13, CC 5-8), however, stormed back and was able to take its first lead with 9:48 left when Jessica Porada capped a 22-4 Bear run by converting a layup to make it 45-44. Jowdy answered on the other end with a trifecta, and a seesaw battle ensued for the next several minutes.
But after Caroline Shimrock nailed a 3-pointer to make it 50-49 in favor of the visitors with 6:29 on the clock, Swarthmore embarked on an 8-0 run and never looked back. Larsen converted three free throws, and Jowdy set up freshman
Bridget Scott for a layup and freshman
Melanie Ackerman for a trey from the right arc to give the Garnet more than enough insurance to pull out the win.
Larsen led Swarthmore with a 24-point, 12-rebound effort in the victory. Jowdy, who netted 19 points on 50 percent shooting from the field added six rebounds and three assists. O'Neil blocked three shots, and Ackerman contributed eight points off the bench.
Ursinus was paced by Jessica Porada, who finished with 18 points and seven rebounds. Alyssa Polimeni registered 10 points, five boards and four steals.
Swarthmore (7-13, CC 4-10) continues a five-game homestand when it hosts Johns Hopkins on Saturday, Feb. 7 at 1 p.m.
