WESTMINSTER, Md. – A 15-match win streak ended for the Swarthmore College volleyball team (17-4, 6-1 CC) on Saturday, Oct. 17 as it fell in five sets to McDaniel to open the afternoon. The Garnet, however, rebounded with a 3-2 win over Lebanon Valley in the conclusion of the tri-match.
Senior setter
Sam DuBois totaled 16 digs on the day and now has over 1,000 for her career.
Swarthmore fell to McDaniel 17-25, 25-21, 23-25, 25-15, 7-15 in a match that lasted over two hours.
Bridget Scott posted a career-high six block assists and DuBois was close behind with four of her own.
Sarah Wallace had her 11th double-double of the year with 20 kills and 18 digs as
Sarah Girard and
Madison Heppe also finished in double figures for digs with 25 and 16, respectively.
After dropping the first set, the Garnet battled back to take the second with three blocks each from Scott and DuBois. McDaniel would regain its advantage after winning the third, but Swarthmore came out strong in fourth, hitting .353 with 15 kills and three errors. Unfortunately for the Garnet, the Green Terror saved its best for last and countered with a .474 hitting percentage in the decisive fifth set.
Earlier this season, Swarthmore beat Lebanon Valley, 3-1, and followed up on Saturday with a five-set, 25-17, 25-22, 17-25, 23-25, 15-12 triumph over LVC.
Malia Scott flirted with a triple-double on 20 digs, nine assists and eight kills while Wallace notched another double-double behind 18 kills and 16 digs. DuBois and
Bridget Scott shared the team-lead for block assists with three apiece and
Elise Cummings served five aces.
Olivia Leventhal hit .313 with 14 kills and four errors in 32 attempts and chipped in two total blocks.
Swarthmore took eight of the first nine points in the opening set and never trailed the Flying Dutchwomen. The Garnet posted a hitting percentage of .311 and limited the opponents to .143 clip on 11 kills and five errors in 42 attempts.
The back-and-forth second set featured eight ties, but only two lead changes as both teams used multi-point runs to remain close. Trailing 7-9, LVC took the next five points for its first lead of the frame, though Swarthmore answered with a three-point streak of its own to even the set. The Garnet later found themselves down by a 16-18 score, but won six of the next seven points to take full control of the set.
Lebanon Valley avoided elimination with wins in the next two games to set up a decisive fifth set. Swarthmore's defense limited the Dutchwomen a match-low .045 hitting percentage and the Garnet battled back from an 11-10 deficit to improve to 17-4 on the season.
The volleyball team continues on the road at Muhlenberg on Wednesday, Oct. 21 for a 7:00 p.m. match.
