Box Score SWARTHMORE, Pa. – The Swarthmore College women's basketball fell to Haverford by a 62-53 score in a Hood Trophy battle on Wednesday, Jan. 21 at Tarble Pavilion.
Haverford jumped out to a 10-2 lead and led from start to finish. Anna Schrecengost converted a layup on the first play of the game before Sierra Berkel capped the stretch with a bucket at the 15:28 mark. Elizabeth Lynch made it 17-6 at the midway point by canning a 3-pointer, and Berkel sank a pair of free throws to extend the lead to 18 at 33-15 as the teams went into the recess.
Despite trailing by 18, Swarthmore came out stronger in the second half and got a pair of layups from senior
Elle Larsen to pull within 13. A trey by
Maggie O'Neil made it 40-30 before the Garnet brought the deficit down to eight on a
Raina Williams layup that created a 49-41 score with 6:51 left.
The hosts, however, would not be able to come any closer the rest of the way. After O'Neil drove in for a layup to keep the margin in single digits, Jacquelyne Pizzuto sank a jumper and nailed a 3-pointer to put the Fords ahead 59-45 and the game out of reach.
Haverford (10-6, CC 8-1) was paced by Pizzuto, who contributed 14 points and three assists in the winning effort. Pallavi Juneja and Lynch netted 11 points apiece, and Shannon Smith contributed eight rebounds and a game-high five blocks.
Larsen netted 14 points and pulled down five rebounds to lead Swarthmore. Jowdy had 12 points and eight rebounds, while O'Neil scored eight points and blocked two shots. Williams came off the bench and scored a career-high eight points on 4-for-6 shooting while grabbing two boards.
Swarthmore (5-11, CC 2-8) visits Dickinson on Saturday, Jan. 21 at 2 p.m.
