Jessica Jowdy recorded her first double-double and freshman
Hayley Raymond set a career high by scoring 10 points, but it wasn't enough, as the Swarthmore College women's basketball team fell to Muhlenberg by an 85-60 score on Thursday, Jan. 15 at Memorial Hall.
Swarthmore kept it close in the beginning of the game and was only trailing 15-14 after Raymond nailed a jumper at the 11:04 mark. The Mules, however, rattled off 12 straight points to take control. Leanna Tellamy, scored four consecutive points on a layup and a pair of free throws to boost the margin to 22 points with under two minutes remaining, and Emily Lesher later followed with two made shots from the stripe to create a 49-25 margin at the break.
The Garnet were only outscored by a point over the final 20 minutes of the game, but the halftime deficit was too much to overcome. Muhlenberg (8-5, CC 7-2) got a 3-pointer from Nicole Pepe and a free throw from Christina Santone to build their lead up to 31 points at 17:45 and never looked back.
Jowdy filled the stat sheet to lead the way for Swarthmore, which brought the deficit down to 19 in the second half before suffering the 25-point setback. She finished with 21 points, a career-high 12 rebounds, three assists, two blocks and two steals. Raymond registered a career-best 10 points, while senior
Elle Larsen added 12 points, five boards and three steals.
Tallamy paced Muhlenberg with a game-high 27 points, which included draining 18 in the first half, to go along with 13 rebounds and two blocks. Michelle Poole and Pepe contributed 12 points apiece to lift the Mules to their fifth straight win.
Swarthmore (4-10, CC 1-7) will look to avenge an earlier loss to Gettysburg when it hosts the Bullets on Saturday, Jan. 17 at 1 p.m.
