Box Score 2 SALISBURY, Md. – The Swarthmore College volleyball team (2-2) closed out the Salisbury University Volleyball Opener with losses to the hosts and Stevens Institute of Technology. The Garnet played a strong five-set match with the Seagulls (26-24, 26-28, 19-25, 26-24, 4-15) and lost in straight sets to Stevens Tech (19-25, 20-25, 19-25).
Freshman
Sarah Wallace led the Garnet offense with two double-doubles on the day, ending with 31 kills and 23 digs. Her weekend performance earned the San Fransisco native a spot on the All-Tournament team.
Three of the five sets with the Seagulls ended with extra points with a total of 33 lead changes throughout the match; the second set saw 10 lead changes before Salisbury pulled away with a 28-26 set win. Swarthmore finished with four double-double performances from freshmen
Bridget Scott and
Malia Scott, junior
Sam DuBois and Wallace. Scott struck 14 kills and 14 digs, while Wallace attacked 20 kills and anchored 12 digs. DuBois and
Malia Scott set the offense with 21 and 22 assists, respectively and combined for 25 digs.
For the Garnet defense, five players racked up double-digit dig numbers led by junior
Madison Heppe with 19; freshman
Olivia Leventhal finished with 11 in the match. Senior
Chastity Hopkins finished with four block assists against Salisbury, while Wallace had two.
In the final match of the tournament, Swarthmore fell in straight sets to Stevens. Again, Wallace and DuBois finished with double-doubles and Heppe led the defense with 17 digs.
Next up, Swarthmore will host the Garnet Classic Saturday, September 13 featuring Wilkes University and Cabrini College.
