SWARTHMORE, Pa. - The Swarthmore College Department of Athletics and "Garnet Go Green" proudly announce the first "Zero-Waste Game" scheduled for Saturday, April 5. On this date, the Garnet women's lacrosse team has a home contest versus Gettysburg at Clothier Field Stadium.
This game represents one of the many steps being taken to reduce the carbon footprint of the Swarthmore Athletics Department. Throughout the game there will be "zero-waste ambassadors" stationed near trash receptacles; they will answer questions about the effort and help you sort your compostable and recyclable materials in the appropriate containers. Concessions are also being offered in conjunction with the zero waste theme; a variety of homemade snacks will be available beginning at halftime.
In recent years, it has been the goal of many athletic organizations, both professional and nonprofessional, to reduce their environmental impact. They have teamed up with organizations such as the National Resources Defense Council and the Green Sports Alliance in order to achieve this goal. The purpose of the "Garnet Go Green" initiative is to ensure that the Swarthmore College athletic programs are doing their part in becoming more sustainable and environmentally friendly. Both short-term and long-term projects are being created in order to achieve this goal. The athletic department will also team up with athletic programs from other institutions through the NRDC and the PA Collegiate Green Sports Consortium in order to become more environmentally sustainable.
