Women’s Basketball Falls Short Against Dickinson

SWARTHMORE, Pa. – Senior Elle Larsen scored a career-high 32 points, but it wasn't enough, as the the Swarthmore College women's basketball team fell to Dickinson by a 73-68 score on Saturday, Dec. 6 at Tarble Pavilion.

The game started as a seesaw battle with neither side leading by more than four points until Maired Donahue hit a jumper to make it 17-11 in favor of the Red Devils at the 11:46 mark. Dickinson then went ahead 26-19 with under five minutes left when Helen Roberts nailed a trifecta before Swarthmore started to rally. Junior Abbey Deckard canned a shot from downtown to give the Garnet their first lead since the opening minutes at 31-29, and Larsen converted a layup to give the hosts a 33-31 edge at the break.
 
Dickinson (2-6, CC 1-5), however, started the second half by scoring five straight points and never looked back. After Mary Martin sank a pair of free throws, Liz Schultz followed with a 3-pointer to make it 36-33 and give the Red Devils the lead for good.  Swarthmore attempted to rally once again and brought the deficit down to two at 41-39 on a Jessica Jowdy layup, but that was as close as the team would come the rest of the way. The Red Devils used a 13-4 run to go up 52-43, which was capped by a Myonie Williamson free throw, and led by as many as 10 before making free throws down the stretch for insurance.
 
Larsen set a career-high 32 points by shooting 12-for-21 from the field and 8-for-10 from the line to lead the way for Swarthmore. She also grabbed 11 rebounds to record her third double-double of the season. Jowdy scored 14 points and matched a career best with six assists.
 
Schultz paced Dickinson by leading three players in twin figures. She scored 16 points and also had four rebounds. Donahue finished with 12 points and seven boards, and Bair added 11 points and three assists.
 
Swarthmore (2-5, CC 0-4) hosts Widener on Wednesday, Dec. 10 at 6 p.m.
