Box Score SWARTHMORE, Pa. – Sophomore
Chris Bourne scored a career-high 25 points to lead the Swarthmore College men's basketball team to a 73-60 triumph over Cairn on Saturday, Nov. 29 at Tarble Pavilion.
The first half was evenly played with five ties and three lead changes. Cairn (0-5) burst out to a 7-2 advantage in the opening minutes before senior
Karl Barkley started the rally for the Garnet by drilling a 3-pointer and converting a layup. Barkley gave the hosts their first lead at 14-12 by finishing a pass from junior
Shane Loeffler and canning another trey at the 15:10 mark.
Swarthmore built up a six-point lead twice and had a 21-15 advantage at the midway point, but the Highlanders started to climb back. Kyle Bonner scored eight consecutive points, which was capped by hitting two free throws, to put Cairn up 23-21 with 6:37 on the clock. The Garnet, however, once again came back and took a 32-28 advantage into the break by getting two charity shots and a layup from sophomore
Chris Bourne before the buzzer.
Cairn kept the game close, but the Garnet never surrendered the lead in the second half. Bourne finished a 3-point play the old-fashioned way to put the hosts up 39-33, and
Tom Wilmots added a layup on the Garnet's next possession to prompt a Highlander timeout with 14:11 on the clock. Yonda later gave the hosts a double-digit lead for the first time by hitting a trey to make it 46-36 with 11:02 left in regulation, providing more than enough insurance for the Garnet to win their second straight game.
Bourne scored a game-high 25 points by shooting a blistering 9-for-14 from the field and a perfect 7-for-7 from the line. It marked the second straight game that he set a career scoring mark after netting 24 in Tuesday's win over Ursinus. Barkley finished with 18 points, which included nailing four shots from downtown, and Yonda added 12 points. Freshman
Robbie Walsh posted six points and six boards.
Omar Askia paced Cairn by scoring all 14 of his points in the second half. Don Sloan added 13 points, while JD Zamroz netted 12. Darnell Clowney recorded six points, six boards and four assists.
